After the completion of the mandatory 6 week probationary period, parents/guardians are required to purchase a Sunrise Waldorf School Bond of $7500 for each student enrolled from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The proceeds from the Bond may be used by the school, interest-free while the student is enrolled in the school. The Bond is redeemable at full face value once the student leaves the school for any reason.
Families are encouraged to join the Sunrise Educational Society. A family membership costs $15.00 and includes an annual subscription to the publication on Waldorf education "Renewal". A second, subsequent membership may be held by a family member at an additional cost of $5.00 to allow two votes for the family.
Parents will be asked to pay additionally for overnight trips and some field trips, certain special projects and other items that become the property of the individual student. These costs vary with classes and parents are encouraged to participate in fundraising for these extra items.
Statements, rendered monthly, are due and payable upon receipt. An interest charge of 2% per month may be applied to outstanding amounts after 30 days. Payment may be made by cheque, cash or Mastercard. A charge of 2.5% will be added to cover the use of Mastercard. It is expected that accounts will be paid on time. Overdue accounts put undue stress on the operation and finances of the school.
The school has many expenses of a continuing nature, such as faculty salaries and plant maintenance. In order to plan and maintain these services over the entire school year, it is essential that the annual revenue from fees be assured. For this reason, students are enrolled for the entire school year or such portion as may remain after the date of entrance. The fact that the fee is paid in installments does not constitute a fractional contract.
The financial contract commences on July 1. If a registered student is withdrawn after this date and before the commencement of classes in September, one-tenth of the annual tuition is due and payable. After the commencement of classes ninety days written notice is required. In the event a child is withdrawn without the required ninety days notice the responsible party(ies) will be required to pay the outstanding fees to cover the ninety day withdrawal notice period. This applies whether the student is withdrawn by parents or dismissed by the school. This requirement will be waived in the event the reason for withdrawal is of a confirmed medical nature.
The ninety day withdrawal notice does not apply to new students during the mandatory six week probationary period, including any extensions. An extension to this probationary period must be agreed to in writing in advance by the teacher and the parent(s).
Sunrise Waldorf School is a certified Group 1 Independent School through the Independent Schools Branch, Ministry of Education. We are therefore qualified to receive an annual grant for qualifying students to assist in covering the costs of their education. Receipt of this grant is integral to the ongoing operations of the school.
Receipt of the grant for each qualified student is incumbent on a minimum of 135 days registered with the school at the commencement of the school year in September through to May 15th of the same academic year. Attendance is not deducted for an unplanned absence such as illness; however it is deducted for vacation time or any reason other than those of an unavoidable nature. Parents are required to submit dated and signed notes confirming reasons for the child's absence. If a child is absent for avoidable reasons or if there is no note on file which disqualifies them from receiving the grant due to loss of attendance days, the person financially responsible for the child(ren) will be responsible for the full amount of the lost grant revenue.
In an effort to make Waldorf education available to those who might otherwise be unable to afford it, Sunrise Waldorf School offers tuition adjustment based on need. There are limited funds available and amounts vary depending on financial circumstances, but generally do not exceed 50% of tuition. To apply, pick up an application form in the office, fill it out and return it to the office. This information is strictly confidential.
